Writer's Block

Title: Writer's Block
Rating: G
Genre: Drabble
Written for Elfscibe's 10th Anniversary in Fandom. Congratulations on 10 wonderful years and to many more to come.

He stared at the blank page as though he could will the words to reveal themselves upon the creamy parchment. Why was the tale so hard to tell? He had lived it, hadn’t he?

A shove from Gandalf and he was off on a real adventure. He had seen the wonders and terrors of the world, talked to the wise, worn a magic ring, escaped danger with his wits and fortitude. But where to start?

‘Start at the beginning, you old fool,’ he chided himself.

“I was trimming the grass at Bag End when I heard voices through the window…”

What happens if you don't know where the beginning is? ;o)

ETA - Glad to see it posted. Sam was always my favourite hobbit!

I'm struggling with the bits in the middle, actually. So many choices: misunderstandings, arguments, jealousy, heartbreak, etc.

I just read somewhere you're meant to torment your characters. ;o)

Which beginning is always the question. You seem to have solved it here...my own still seems quite tangled :-)

Thanks Erulisse, sometimes the hardest part of writing is knowing where to start... and in my case when to end. lol

OH what an awesome - !

Yes. So cool I'm not even going to count to see if it's really a hundred. (Except that I did, and it is.)

Love that revelatory opening-at-the-end. Aside from the broadly empathetic spirit that I guess most of us can bring to this piece, I also like the fact that it shows Sam in his capacity as a writer/chronicler. Just another one of his many roles.

LOL Now you know I wouldn't post a faux drabble.

It's one of the things people don't always think of when they think of Sam (if they think of him at all) that he was a writer too. I could imagine him struggling, like we all do, with those first words.

Thanks for your comments, Laud. I'm glad you like this one.
